The Girls Are Back In Town!

Farnborough 24 - 12 Newbury

A rainy Sunday away to Farnborough (again!) saw the start of Newbury WRFC's 06/07 season. A few nerves and missed tackles from kick off meant Farnborough quickly converted two tries for a 14-0 lead.  Soon, Newbury got to grips with the task at hand and mounted a sustained attack punching holes through the middle of Farnborough's defence.  Picking and going and rolling mauls meant Farnborough were pinned to their 5 metre for a good few minutes before centre - Rachel Le Coq chipped one through for Louise Bellaers to chase, beating two Farnborough girls to the touch, to get us off the mark.

The game continued with sustained pressure from the entire Newbury team, conditions were such that kicking and back moves were limited.  Two chips over the top, one at the beginning and one midway, worked against the Blues as they were caught and run in with ease to add 14 points to the Farnborough tally.  Learning from their mistakes and adjusting to the conditions, Newbury's team play, support and solid rucking put them, once again, in a position where Linda Berry finished a move which saw several Newbury players denied just before the try line.  Despite losing, Newbury have nothing to be ashamed of, this was the oppositions fifth game of the season and their game was peppered with moments of individual brilliance, whereas Newbury demonstrated fine team cohesion which will endure.  Farnborough should be wary of a less nervous Newbury when they next play.

Forward of the match went to Prop - Helen Mitford returning from injury.  Back of the match went to 'new girl' Sam Radbourne.

Final word goes to Farnborough's Fly Half, rarely at this level do you see a female rugby player with a 100% kicking record.
